Pollution due to emission of cars

Most Polluting Cars Revealed

Lets start with knowing the emission norms in India. Currently India is following the Bharat Stage (BS) IV norms. Bharat Stage Norms exactly the same as Euro norms. The differences lie essentially in environmental and geographical needs, even though the emission standards are exactly the same. For instance, Euro-III is tested at sub-zero temperatures in European countries. In India, where the average annual temperature ranges between 24 and 28 °C, the test is done away with. Another major distinction is in the maximum speed at which the vehicle is tested. A speed of 90 km/h is stipulated for BS-III, whereas it is 120 km/h for Euro-III, keeping emission limits the same in both cases.

In addition to limits, test procedure has certain finer points too. For instance, the mass emission test measurements done in g/km on a chassis dynamometer requires a loading of 100 kg weight in addition to unloaded car weight in Europe. In India, BS-III norms require an extra loading of 150 kg weight to achieve the desired inertia weight mainly due to road conditions here.

In 2016, the Indian government announced that the country would skip the BS-V norms altogether and adopt BS-VI norms by 2020. Euro 6 is particularly targeting nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

Norms help in bringing down pollution levels, it invariably results in increased vehicle cost due to the improved technology & higher fuel prices.  Exposure to air pollution can lead to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, which is estimated to be the cause for 6.2 lakh early deaths in 2010, and the health cost of air pollution in India has been assessed at 3% of its GDP.

Here’s a list of LCV brands and how they’re dealing with EU6"

Fiat Professional

All up to speed with Euro 6; Ducati notable for using Low Pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation instead of the more common SCR technology to meet the requirement.
Fiat Ducato is now Euro 6 compliant

Ford

All-new Euro 6 2.0-litre diesel engine for the Transit and Transit Custom replaces the old 2.2-litre diesel, bringing increased power, a wider spread of torque, and a 13 percent increase in fuel economy.
Transit and Transit Custom now Euro 6 compliant

Great Wall

Uncertain outlook for Chinese maker Great Wall, as it has no Euro 6 engine provision for the Steed pickup at this stage; we’ll report further details as soon as we have them.

Hyundai

Hyundai tells us it has “certificates of conformity” for the remaining stock of its Euro 5-engined iLoad van, allowing it to register these all the way up to 1 April 2017. The stock won’t last that long, though, and Euro 6 models started production in May  2016, so any fresh stock will be Euro 6 compliant.

Isuzu

Isuzu has successfully applied for end of series derogation for the D-Max pickup, and will continue to sell Euro 5 versions until early 2017 when, as we’ve already reported, an entirely updated model will be introduced.

Iveco

The Iveco Daily is fully up to date with Euro 6 already.

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes was the first brand to market with Euro 6, starting with the Sprinter. Rear-wheel drive Vitos were Euro 6 from launch, and the Citan became Euro 6 in June 2016.

Mitsubishi
In contrast to the Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi has managed to bring its Series 5 L200 pickup up to Euro 6 standard by using a NOx trap rather than an AdBlue system - meaning no loss of fuel tank capacity, nor changes to the payload rating.
The Comms (short for Commercial) versions of the Outlander and Shogun are also now Euro 6 compliant.

Nissan

The latest Nissan LCV to meet Euro 6 is the NP300 Navara, which uses an updated version of the firm’s 2.3-litre diesel engine. Payloads even increase on some versions, though power output remains the same at 160hp for the single-turbo and 190hp for the twin-turbo.

PSA Peugeot Citroen

Both the Peugeot and Citroen LCV ranges are ready to meet Euro 6 requirements.

Renault

Euro 6 updates bring a 5hp gain for every Renault Trafic, while twin-turbo versions of the Master also receive a 5hp boost. However, 50kg weight of the SCR system also reduces the Master’s maximum payload.

Toyota

The latest Hilux was Euro 6 from launch, while the Proace van gets its update in September 2016.

Vauxhall

The latest Corsavan was Euro 6 at its introduction last year, the rest of the range are available to order with Euro 6 engines now, with first deliveries set for autumn 2016.

Volkswagen

Fully Euro 6 compliant.
